Cobre Panamá donates cultivation facilities to University of Panama

In addition to the growing facilities, Cobre Panamá also provides ample storage facilities for supplies, materials and tools, as well as an irrigation system and cucumber seeds. These resources are critical to the development of greenhouse educational activities. The University of Panama has generously acquired 230 square meters of farmland generously donated by Cobre Panamá. Students have the unique opportunity to create a controlled microclimate in the facility, allowing them to grow healthier fruits and vegetables.

(1/Feb/2022 – web) Panama – Cobre Panama is committed to promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices in the communities near the mine. As part of this commitment, the company has generously donated a 230m2 grow house, also known as a tropicalised greenhouse, to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Panama’s Coclé Regional University Centre.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the mining company for its valuable contribution to the strengthening of the Agroforestry Engineering course. Through this growing house, our students will be able to familiarise themselves with this technology that has been gaining popularity around the world, allowing the production of food in reduced spaces in a more environmentally friendly way,” said Fulgencio Álvarez, director of the University Centre of Coclé.

Thanks to this donation, approximately 100 students of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering will have the valuable opportunity to acquire knowledge in the management of closed spaces that allow farmers to create a controlled microclimate. This is achieved by controlling temperature, environmental factors and humidity, which will allow them to obtain off-season productions, reduce water consumption through an automated irrigation system and minimise the use of phytotoxic products. All this guarantees the cultivation of healthier fruit and vegetables for everyone.

In this sense, Miguel Jaén, Community Affairs Manager of the mining company, encouraged the students of the Regional Centre to continue studying and deepening in these modern techniques.

“At Cobre Panama, we have been committed for 12 years to addressing the full educational cycle of people in our neighbouring communities through various programmes that support them from early childhood through university. For example, we have the Integral Schools programme, which includes sustainable production components to guarantee food in 70 schools, as well as scholarships for higher education that we offer to young people to motivate them to pursue university studies,” said the Community Affairs manager.

This initiative also supports the development and continuous innovation of the Technical Dissemination Programme for Coclé Producers, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA).

In addition to the growing house, Cobre Panama provided a warehouse for inputs, materials and tools, an irrigation system and cucumber seeds that will be in charge of inaugurating the educational activities of this greenhouse.
