Around the world, states are failing global migrants and refugees. We need to rethink our approach away from deterrence.
The world is facing an unprecedented level of displacement and migration. According to the UN Refugee Agency, more than 70 million people around the world are either refugees, internally displaced, or seeking asylum. This is the highest number ever recorded.
It is no surprise that the most affected countries are those with weak economies, poor governance, and little or no access to basic rights. For many, the only way out of poverty and persecution is to leave their home and seek a better life elsewhere.
Unfortunately, their dreams are often shattered when they reach their destination countries. Faced with hostile policies, an unwelcoming public, and limited access to resources, they end up living in precarious conditions, afraid to ask for help due to fear of deportation.
It is clear that the current approach to addressing the migration crisis is failing. States are increasingly relying on deterrence and enforcement to manage migration flows instead of offering assistance and protection to those in need. This approach has proven to be ineffective and has led to the inhumane treatment of migrants and refugees.
Instead of relying solely on deterrence, we must begin to think of innovative solutions that offer assistance and protection to those in need. We must recognize the human right of those seeking refuge and offer them safe passage to their destination countries.
We need to create legally binding international frameworks that will ensure the protection of migrants and refugees. These frameworks should ensure consistent standards of treatment, the provision of fair and just processes, and the protection of fundamental rights.
At the same time, countries should work together to find long-term solutions to the root causes of displacement, such as poverty, inequality, and persecution. This should be done through international cooperation and with the support of civil society and the private sector.
We must also create more inclusive and welcoming societies. This requires us to dispel the myths and misinformation that have long been associated with migration. We must also work to create a more positive narrative around migration that emphasizes its potential benefits.
Finally, we must find ways to empower migrants and refugees. This should be done by providing them with access to basic services, the opportunity to regularize their status, and pathways to achieving their goals.
It is clear that we need to rethink our approach to global migration and refugees. We must shift away from the current focus on deterrence and towards more compassionate and effective policies that will ensure the protection and wellbeing of those in need.
