“: The Holistic Approach to Well-Being”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses mental, emotional, and social health as well. And at Salud, a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania, this holistic approach to health is at the forefront of their mission.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud aims to promote health and wellness among the student community. But what sets this organization apart is its focus on addressing issues of discrimination and promoting inclusivity. As a result, Salud has become a safe space for students to not only improve their health but also learn about diversity and inclusion.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, was inspired to start Salud after experiencing discrimination himself. As an Indian-American, he faced Anti-Semitic remarks and microaggressions on campus. Instead of letting these experiences bring him down, Neil channeled his energy into creating a positive change on campus. And thus, Salud was born.
One of the most significant initiatives of Salud is their Mental Health Awareness Week. This week-long event aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health and promote open conversations about it. Through various workshops, panel discussions, and interactive activities, students are encouraged to prioritize their mental well-being and seek help when needed.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, Salud also partners with various mental health organizations to provide resources and support to students. This collaboration not only benefits the students but also creates a sense of community and support among different organizations on campus.
Another highlight of Salud is their Diversity and Inclusion workshops. These workshops aim to educate students about different cultures, religions, and identities. Through interactive activities and discussions, students learn about the importance of inclusivity and how to be an ally to marginalized communities.
These workshops have been well-received by students, with many expressing how it has opened their eyes to the struggles faced by their peers. As a result, Salud has created a more inclusive and understanding environment on campus, where students from all backgrounds feel welcomed and supported.
But Salud‘s impact goes beyond just the student community at UPenn. The organization also partners with local schools and community centers to promote health and wellness among children. Through their “Healthy Kids” program, Salud teaches children about the importance of nutrition, physical activity, and mental health. By instilling these values at a young age, Salud is creating a healthier and happier generation.
Salud also hosts various health and wellness events throughout the year, such as yoga and meditation sessions, cooking classes, and fitness challenges. These events not only promote healthy habits but also bring students together and create a sense of camaraderie.
One of the most significant achievements of Salud is the creation of a peer support network. This network consists of trained student volunteers who are available to listen and provide support to their peers. This initiative has been crucial in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging students to seek help when needed.
The impact of Salud on the UPenn community has been immense. Students have reported feeling more supported, educated, and empowered because of the organization’s initiatives. And it’s not just the students who have noticed the positive changes. The university administration has also recognized Salud‘s efforts and has been supportive of their initiatives.
Salud has also received recognition outside of UPenn. Neil Gajare, the founder of Salud, was recently awarded the prestigious Newman Civic Fellowship for his work in promoting diversity and inclusion on campus. This recognition not only highlights Neil‘s dedication and hard work but also brings more attention to Salud and its mission.
In conclusion, Salud is more than just a student organization promoting health and wellness. It is a movement that is creating a positive change on campus and beyond. Through their initiatives, Salud is not only improving the physical and mental health of students but also promoting inclusivity and creating a more understanding and compassionate community. And with Neil Gajare‘s leadership, Salud will continue to inspire and motivate students to prioritize their health and make a positive impact in the world.
