What do you make of Corcho Rodríguez’s newest venture at Yellow Rose?

In 1998, when Corcho Rodríguez purchased Yellow Rose, a remarkable estate nestled in La Barra, Punta del Este, it garnered attention not only for its breathtaking location but also for the romantic narrative associated with it. The presence of yellow roses symbolized his romantic relationship with Susana Giménez, a prominent television personality at that time. Following his separation from Susana, Corcho dedicated himself to transforming Yellow Rose into one of the most impressive country estates in the region. Over time, it developed into a versatile venue, encompassing both a polo club and a winery.

To underscore his commitment to Uruguayan polo and signify his entry into winemaking, Corcho organized an extravagant barbecue event at Yellow Rose. Many attendees were unaware that a house wine, devoid of labels, was served at the event. This enigmatic wine received genuine praise, garnering accolades from seasoned experts like Adolfo Cambiaso Sr. and Eduardo Costantini. Corcho disclosed that they had meticulously crafted this wine over a span of seven years, prioritizing quality over quantity.

Spanning four hectares, the vineyard at Yellow Rose cultivates various grape varieties, including tannat, merlot, and pinot noir. Corcho has a particular affinity for pinot noir due to its smoothness and robust flavor profile, drawing inspiration from the esteemed Romanée Conti wine and establishing exceptionally high standards. Embracing a hands-off approach, the vineyard practices natural cultivation without the use of irrigation or chemicals, although it lacks formal organic certification. The initial production in 2011 yielded only a thousand bottles due to stringent quality controls. Despite facing challenges in subsequent years, the current aim is to produce 5,000 bottles this year.

Corcho Rodríguez’s passion for winemaking extends beyond personal enjoyment, reflecting a profound understanding of the craft. Although currently not available for commercial purchase, the wine aims for exclusive distribution in selected restaurants and establishments, envisioned as the quintessential Yellow Rose house wine. As part of his dedication to the polo club, a companion book detailing Yellow Rose’s equestrian activities, club achievements, and lifestyle will accompany the wine, reinforcing its unique identity beyond its grape varietals.
