Additional affordable housing options for seniors coming to Aurora

Welcome news arrived for seniors in Aurora Tuesday morning, as the Aurora Housing Authority announced the addition of 70 new affordable housing units to its already extensive portfolio. This move is a reflection of the authority’s commitment towards providing quality and affordable homes to seniors in the community.

Currently, the Aurora Housing Authority owns and manages more than 800 units of rental housing, and with the addition of these 70 units specifically dedicated to seniors, they are taking a step further in fulfilling their mission. This development, known as 1449 Senior Estates, is located on Aurora’s far west side off Jericho Road, offering a peaceful and convenient location for its future residents.

For Aurora resident Jan Kuchmek, this announcement couldn’t have come at a better time. She shared, “I know eventually I’ll need to find some housing I can afford. It can be quite overwhelming and stressful to think about it, but with this new development, I have hope and peace of mind.” Kuchmek is eagerly waiting to apply for one of the units and become a part of this vibrant community.

The new development is set to be completed by September and will consist of 70 single-family homes and duplexes. These units are designed to provide a comfortable and independent living experience for the seniors. The complex will also feature pickleball courts and a clubhouse, providing opportunities for socialization and recreation.

The executive director of Aurora Housing Authority, Ralph Jordan, is proud of this development and its unique features. He stated, “These single-family homes and duplexes are a significant addition to our portfolio. We want our residents to have the feel of living in a nice house, which is why we have included attached garages in the design, providing convenience and luxury.”

To be eligible for these units, all residents living in the home must be 62 years or older and have a fixed income. Additionally, there is a 60% median area income maximum, ensuring that the units remain affordable for the residents. For instance, a single resident making no more than $46,380 or a two-person household with a combined income of $52,980 will be eligible for these units.

Moreover, in line with the authority’s commitment towards affordability, residents will only have to pay 30% of their income towards rent, making it easier for them to manage their expenses. This rent structure is significantly lower than the average rental rates in Aurora, giving seniors more financial stability and security.

The pre-applications for the units will open on Wednesday, April 3 at 8:00 a.m. Interested individuals can apply by visiting the Aurora Housing Authority’s homepage and clicking on the “apply for housing” link. It is important to note that these units are in high demand, and the application process will be based on a first-come-first-serve basis. Therefore, it is advised to apply as soon as possible to secure a spot in this new development.

This news has been met with excitement and enthusiasm from the senior community in Aurora. The addition of these affordable housing units is a big step towards addressing the growing need for affordable homes for seniors in the city. It also reflects the Aurora Housing Authority’s dedication towards the well-being and quality of life of its residents.

In a society where affordable housing is a major concern, the Aurora Housing Authority’s efforts to provide safe, comfortable, and affordable homes to its residents are commendable. The authority’s commitment towards building a stronger and more inclusive community is evident through this new development, and it is certainly a ray of hope for seniors in Aurora.

In conclusion, this announcement brings hope and joy for seniors in Aurora. It not only provides them with an affordable and comfortable living option but also gives them a sense of security for their future. The Aurora Housing Authority’s efforts to improve the quality of life for seniors in the community should be applauded, and we can only hope that more initiatives like this will continue to make a positive impact in the lives of the residents.
