Bailundo, located in Huambo, is now home to a newly inaugurated solar power plant capable of generating 7.992 MWdc

The Solar Energy Center is set to benefit more than 51,023 residents of Bailundo municipality in Huambo province. As part of the Minister of Energy and Water’s visit program to the southern region today, December 12, a comprehensive agenda is planned in the municipalities of Bailundo, Ecunha, and Huambo.

On Tuesday, December 12, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Photovoltaic Solar Center in Bailundo was held, boasting a production capacity of 7,992 MWdc, in line with the Angola 2025 Plan established by the Angolan government. The objective is to elevate electrification rates by utilizing environmentally friendly energy sources to aid households and businesses in transitioning from irregular and costly fossil fuel energy to more affordable and cleaner alternatives.

The ceremony, led by Minister of Energy and Water João Baptista Borges, saw the attendance of Provincial Governor Notti Nolika, King of Bailundo Chiongolola Chongonga, along with high-ranking officials from MINEA, the energy sector, DNEER, PRODEL, ENDE, and local government. The signing of the Consignment Deed was conducted by representatives from PRODEL and MCA on behalf of the Angolan government.

During the event, the minister underscored the significance of this milestone, emphasizing the objectives outlined by President of the Republic João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço to provide cleaner and more affordable energy for Angolan families. The aim is to achieve approximately 70% renewable energy in the national energy matrix by 2027, thereby enhancing citizens’ quality of life.

With a budget of EUR 20,271,445.00, the project is slated for completion in 2023, featuring the installation of 15,600 panels and an anticipated creation of 50 direct jobs. Following the ceremony, the minister and his delegation conducted a site visit for evaluation, then proceeded to the Ecunha Municipality to inspect the progress of electrification works.
