‘I don’t … consider Israel a real place’: Upstart candidate challenges arch-Zionist Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Jen Perelman, a 45-year-old attorney and mother of two, is making waves in Florida’s 25th congressional district with her unapologetically anti-Zionist, pro-Palestinian views. She represents a new generation of leaders who are not afraid to speak their mind and challenge the status quo. Her bold stance has made her a potent challenger to incumbent Debbie Wasserman Schulz, who has held the seat for nearly two decades.

Perelman’s campaign is centered around social justice and advocating for the voices often overlooked by mainstream politicians- the marginalized, oppressed, and displaced. As a Jewish woman herself, Perelman’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict has been met with both praise and criticism. But she stands firm in her belief that the current situation in Palestine is a humanitarian crisis that requires immediate attention and action.

Perelman’s journey towards activism and political involvement started when she became a mother. She couldn’t bear the thought of her children growing up in a world where injustice and inequality were the norm. This motivated her to speak up and take action, starting with her local community. As she became more involved, she realized that true change could only come through the political system.

Her platform is focused on progressive policies, including Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and criminal justice reform. However, it is her stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict that has garnered the most attention. Perelman believes that the United States has played a significant role in perpetuating the occupation of Palestine and has not done enough to address the ongoing human rights violations against Palestinian people.

In an interview with The Intercept, Perelman stated, “We can’t discuss everything through the lens of national security, which is the argument that is always used when it comes to Israel. It’s not an issue of national security. It’s an issue of human rights.” Her perspective has resonated with many in the district, especially with its diverse and vibrant Jewish community.

Perelman’s opponent, Debbie Wasserman Schulz, has a long-standing relationship with AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) and has been a vocal supporter of Israel throughout her political career. She has also criticized Perelman’s views, claiming they are out of touch with the majority of the district’s Jewish constituents. However, Perelman’s strong support from within the Jewish community has proven otherwise.

One of Perelman’s strongest endorsements came from renowned Jewish activist and author, Norman Finkelstein, who stated, “Jen’s not only a refreshing change from Schultz, but she’s a voice for the voiceless Palestinians.” This endorsement further highlights the impact Perelman’s campaign has had on many who want to see a more balanced approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Perelman’s campaign has gained national attention, with progressive figures such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders endorsing her bid for Congress. Ocasio-Cortez even donated $1,000 to her campaign, showing solidarity with Perelman’s commitment to social justice and progressive policies.

The Florida 25th district is heavily Democratic, making the primary election on August 18th essentially the deciding moment of who will represent the district in Congress. Perelman faces an uphill battle against Wasserman Schulz’s long-standing role in the district, but her grassroots campaign has been gaining momentum, with strong support from younger, more progressive voters.

If Perelman is successful in her bid for Congress, she would be a breath of fresh air in Washington, unafraid to challenge the status quo and advocate for issues that often get swept under the rug. Her campaign has sparked important conversations about the state of the Israel-Palestine conflict and has shown that there is a growing appetite for change and a commitment to social justice among voters in the district.

As the August 18th primary draws near, the eyes of the nation are on Perelman and her unapologetically anti-Zionist, pro-Palestinian campaign. Win or lose, Perelman’s candidacy has already made an impact and has given a voice to those who have long been silenced. Her message of standing up for the disenfranchised and creating a more just society resonates beyond Florida’s 25th district, inspiring others to speak up and take action for what they believe in.
