Zimbabwe fights higher drug abuse cases, especially among youth

HARARE, ZIMBABWE — During the past year, Zimbabwe has seen a surge in arrests related to drug and substance abuse, with close to 2,400 individuals taken into custody. This alarming statistic highlights the growing and urgent problem of substance abuse in the country, particularly among unemployed youth.

According to officials, the economic difficulties facing the nation have significantly hampered efforts to curb this issue. As a result, the Zimbabwean government has recently approved a review of fines and penalties for businesses found guilty of selling illicit drugs. This includes fines ranging from $30 to $400 or imprisonment of up to two years.

Moreover, in addition to the arrests made, authorities have also raided and destroyed 48 drug bases in six provinces. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to tackling the issue head-on and making Zimbabwe a safer and healthier place for all its citizens.

During a recent address, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere emphasized that the fight against drug and substance abuse will continue in all provinces of Zimbabwe. He also highlighted the role of religious organizations in promoting awareness and encouraging young people to lead drug-free lives.

One former drug user, Oscar Pambuka, has shared his personal experience and the devastating effects of substance abuse on his life. After being released from prison for drug-related offenses, Pambuka emphasized the need for more resources and support for those struggling with addiction. He also stressed the importance of creating job opportunities for unemployed youth as a way to prevent them from turning to drugs.

Pambuka shared that he began using crystal methamphetamine after his divorce and lack of employment. He said that through these new associations, he fell in love with the temporary joy and comfort that drugs provided. However, this ultimately led to the loss of financial resources and relationships, as many people do not want to associate with drug users. Pambuka also shared how his drug use caused him to lose a significant amount of weight, but he is now regaining some of it while in jail.

Despite the challenges and hardships faced by individuals like Pambuka, he also acknowledged the positive impact of his time in jail. He said, “I thank God for the incarceration,” and is now determined to turn his life around and stay away from drugs.

The economic difficulties that Zimbabwe has faced in recent years, compounded by the impact of U.S. sanctions, have undoubtedly contributed to the rise in substance abuse. However, critics also point to corruption and poor policies as key factors in the country’s economic decline.

With an annual inflation rate of 55%, Zimbabweans continue to face a high cost of living. Although this is significantly lower than the hyperinflation experienced in the past, it still poses challenges for ordinary citizens. Addressing the issue of drug and substance abuse is crucial in ensuring the well-being and progress of the nation.

To combat this problem, representatives from the government and United Nations agencies in Zimbabwe will meet with President Emmerson Mnangagwa this Wednesday in Harare. The goal is to develop a national plan to tackle drug and substance abuse comprehensively.

In closing, it is clear that drug and substance abuse is a growing issue in Zimbabwe that requires immediate attention. The recent surge in arrests and efforts by the government to tackle the problem are promising steps towards a brighter future for the nation. It is essential to continue raising awareness and providing support and resources to those struggling with addiction. Together, we can build a healthier and drug-free Zimbabwe.
