The Solar Energy Production Plant will benefit over 51,023 residents of the localities in the municipality of Bailundo, in the province of Huambo. Today, December 12th, the Minister of Energy and Water is visiting the municipalities of Bailundo, Ecunha, and Huambo as part of his agenda in the south of the country.
This Tuesday, December 12th, in the municipality of Bailundo, a ceremony was held to commence and lay the foundation stone for the construction of the Bailundo Photovoltaic Solar Plant, with a capacity of 7.992 MWdc, as part of the Angola 2025 Plan. This plan, established by the Angolan government, aims to increase the electrification rate using green energy sources, providing cheaper and cleaner energy for local households and businesses, facilitating the transition from irregular electricity generated by fossil fuels to continuous energy.
The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, accompanied by the Provincial Governor, Notti Nolika, the King of Bailundo, Chiongolola Chongonga, and senior officials from MINEA, the energy sector, DNEER, PRODEL, ENDE, and the local government. The signing of the Consignment Agreement was carried out by senior officials from PRODEL and MCA, representing the Angolan government, with the participation of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of PRODEL, Pedro Eduardo Afonso, assisted by Haillé Arrissandro Vieira Dias Ferrão, and the MCA consortium – Manuel Couto Alves, the contractor of the project.
During the event, the minister highlighted the priority of the President of the Republic, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, to ensure that more Angolan families have access to clean and affordable energy, aiming to reach 70% of the National Energy Matrix with renewable energies by 2027, improving the quality of life for Angolans who still do not have access to the national public energy grid. The project, valued at EUR 20,271,445.00, is expected to be completed within three months from the contract signing date, with the installation of 15,600 solar panels, predicting savings of around EUR 6,117,409.32 and the creation of 50 direct jobs.
At the end of the ceremony, the minister and his delegation visited the project and then traveled to the municipality of Ecunha to assess the progress of electrification works.
