NYT, Guardian parrot Israel’s absurd ‘bombing to de-escalate’ framing

In recent years, the tension in the Middle East has only continued to worsen, with Israel at the center of much of the conflict. Time and time again, we see headlines of violence, death, and destruction coming out of this region. And yet, no matter how many people Israel kills, or how much it expands its “war,” the world is quick to frame their actions as self-defensive and de-escalatory. This dangerous narrative not only masks the true nature of Israel’s actions, but it also perpetuates the cycle of violence and injustice in the region.

It is important to understand that the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine is not a symmetrical one. On one side, we have a powerful, well-equipped state with the backing of many Western powers, including the United States. On the other side, we have a stateless people, with limited resources and military capabilities, fighting for their basic rights and freedom. Yet, despite this glaring power imbalance, Israel continues to portray itself as the victim, and the international community is more than willing to accept this narrative.

This is evident in the language used to describe Israel’s actions. When Israeli forces kill innocent Palestinian civilians, they are often referred to as “clashes” or “skirmishes.” This language suggests that there is an equal fight between two opposing sides, rather than an oppressive nation using excessive force against a defenseless population. On the other hand, when Palestinians resist the illegal occupation and colonization of their land, they are labeled as “terrorists” or “militants.” This dehumanizing language serves to justify Israel’s brutal actions and deflect any criticism or accountability.

Furthermore, Israel has mastered the art of framing its aggression as self-defensive. They often claim to be responding to rocket fire from Gaza, conveniently omitting the fact that these rockets are a response to years of occupation, blockade, and violence. Israel’s military operations, which often result in the deaths of innocent civilians, are portrayed as necessary measures to ensure their security. Yet, these operations only further destabilize the region and deepen the divide between Israelis and Palestinians.

It is also worth mentioning the concept of “proportionality” that is often used to justify Israel’s actions. This principle, which is supposed to limit the use of force in armed conflicts, is often twisted by Israel to justify their excessive and disproportionate use of force against Palestinians. This has resulted in countless war crimes and human rights violations, yet Israel continues to get away with it, while the international community turns a blind eye.

The international media plays a significant role in perpetuating this narrative of Israeli victimhood. When reporting on the conflict, they often focus on Israeli casualties and ignore or downplay the Palestinian casualties. This biased reporting creates a distorted perception of the reality on the ground and further perpetuates the myth of Israel as a victim.

Moreover, Israel’s military operations are often framed as “de-escalatory” and aimed at restoring calm and ending the violence. Yet, these so-called de-escalatory operations often result in more destruction and loss of life. The recent bombing of Gaza, for example, was portrayed as a response to Hamas rocket fire, but in reality, it only escalated the violence and resulted in the deaths of over 250 Palestinians, including dozens of children.

This framing of Israel’s actions as self-defensive and de-escalatory not only distorts the truth, but it also gives Israel a free pass to continue its policies of occupation, land confiscation, and oppression. It also undermines the efforts of those working towards a just and peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In order to break this dangerous narrative and bring about a just and lasting peace, it is crucial for the international community to see through Israel’s rhetoric and hold them accountable for their actions. The ongoing violence and bloodshed will only come to an end when the root causes of the conflict are addressed, and Palestinians are granted their basic rights, including the right to self-determination. This will require the international community to stop blindly supporting Israel and start demanding accountability for their actions.

In conclusion, it is clear that Israel’s actions are far from self-defensive and de-escalatory. They are part of a larger strategy to maintain their grip on the land and oppress the Palestinian people. It is time for the world to see through this false narrative and take a stand for justice and equality for all people in the region. Only then can we hope for a future of
