Jewish Americans hold nationwide Oct. 7 vigils for Palestinian, Lebanese, and Israeli lives

Organized by If Not Now, a Jewish activist group, a series of vigils were recently held in public spaces across the United States to mourn the lives lost in the ongoing violence between Israel and Palestine. These vigils not only provided a space for collective grief, but also served as a call to action for the end of US arms shipments to Israel.

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has been ongoing for decades, resulting in countless lives lost and immense suffering on both sides. In recent weeks, tensions have escalated with the forced evictions of Palestinians from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem and the violent clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

In response to these events, If Not Now, a movement of young American Jews working to end the American Jewish community’s support for the occupation of Palestine, organized a series of vigils in over 50 cities across the US. These vigils were held in public spaces, including parks, city squares, and outside government buildings, to bring attention to the ongoing violence and to mourn the lives lost.

The vigils were a powerful display of solidarity and unity, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to grieve and stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Many held signs with messages such as “End the Occupation” and “Palestinian Lives Matter”, while others lit candles and read the names of the Palestinian children who have been killed in the violence.

The organizers of the vigils emphasized the importance of holding these events in public spaces, stating, “We are here to mourn the lives lost in this violence, but we are also here to reclaim our public spaces. We will not be silenced or pushed aside. We will stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and demand an end to the violence and the occupation.”

One of the key demands of the vigils was for the US government to stop supplying arms to Israel. The US is the largest supplier of military aid to Israel, providing billions of dollars each year in weapons and military equipment. This support has been criticized by human rights organizations for fueling the ongoing violence and contributing to the oppression of the Palestinian people.

In a statement, If Not Now explained, “We cannot stand by and watch our tax dollars being used to fund the oppression and violence against the Palestinian people. We call on the US government to immediately stop providing weapons to Israel and to instead work towards a peaceful resolution to this conflict.”

The vigils also received support from various organizations and individuals, including Jewish Voice for Peace, a leading Jewish anti-occupation organization, and Ilhan Omar, a US Representative and vocal critic of US support for Israel.

The vigils were a powerful reminder that the Jewish community is not a monolith and that many American Jews do not support the Israeli government’s actions towards Palestine. It also demonstrated the growing movement within the Jewish community to speak out against the occupation and demand an end to the violence.

As the vigils came to an end, If Not Now announced that they would continue to organize and mobilize in support of the Palestinian people. They called on the Jewish community to join them in standing up against the occupation and to support the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice.

In a time of such immense pain and suffering, the vigils organized by If Not Now provided a glimmer of hope and solidarity. They showed that even in the face of tragedy, people can come together, raise their voices, and demand change. The message was clear: the violence must end, and the US must take responsibility for its role in perpetuating it.

In conclusion, the vigils organized by If Not Now were a powerful display of grief, solidarity, and activism. They brought attention to the ongoing violence in Israel and Palestine and called for an end to the US arms shipments to Israel. As the movement continues to grow and gain support, it is clear that the demand for justice and peace in the region will only continue to get louder. The time for change is now, and we must all stand together in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
