The Oak Park community is mourning the loss of one of their own, Detective Allan Reddins, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on Black Friday. The 53-year-old detective was responding to a report of a person with a gun at a bank in the Chicago suburb when he was shot and killed.
The news of Reddins’ death sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, as he was known and loved by many. He had been a member of the Oak Park Police Department for over 20 years and was highly respected by his colleagues and the community he served.
On Thursday, the community will come together to honor and pay their final respects to Detective Reddins. A wake and funeral service will be held at the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. The wake will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. The services will also be streamed live on YouTube for those who are unable to attend in person.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Oak Park Lodge #8, Fraternal Order of Police, has set up a fund to support Reddins’ family. Those who wish to donate can do so via Zelle at [email protected] or by scanning a QR code available on the village’s website. All funds raised will directly benefit Reddins’ family, especially his son who is currently attending college out-of-state, and his mother who is receiving medical treatment.
Earlier this week, a candlelight vigil and visitation service were held in honor of Detective Reddins. The outpouring of love and support from the community was a testament to the impact he had on those around him.
The Oak Park Police Department announced charges against a Chicago man in connection with Reddins’ killing on Saturday. The suspect, who has not been named, fatally shot Reddins after police responded to calls of an armed man leaving a bank in downtown Oak Park.
The loss of Detective Reddins has left a void in the Oak Park community. He was not only a dedicated and brave police officer but also a beloved friend and family man. His death marks the department’s first line of duty death since 1938, making it even more devastating for the community.
Despite the tragic circumstances, the community has come together to support Reddins’ family and honor his memory. The Oak Park Police Department has also received an outpouring of support from neighboring departments and law enforcement agencies, showing the strong bond and camaraderie among those who serve and protect.
As we say goodbye to Detective Reddins, let us remember his selfless service and dedication to keeping our community safe. He will forever be remembered as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Detective Reddins. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.
