My name is Mahmoud Khalil and I am a political prisoner.

Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian political prisoner, has been held in an ICE detention center in Louisiana for over a year now. He has been separated from his family and his homeland, and his only connection to the outside world is through a phone call. As a journalist, I had the privilege of speaking with Mahmoud over the phone, where he dictated a letter to be shared with the world. Through his words, he shared his story of struggle and hope, and his unwavering determination to fight for justice and freedom.

In his letter, Mahmoud expressed his gratitude to all those who have stood by him and supported him through this difficult time. He said, “I am grateful for all the love and support I have received from my fellow Palestinians, as well as from people all around the world. Your unwavering support gives me strength and hope to continue fighting for our cause.”

Mahmoud’s story is one of resilience and courage. He was a prominent activist in Palestine, advocating for the rights of his people and standing up against the occupation. In 2018, he was arrested by Israeli forces and sentenced to 5 years in prison on false charges. However, after serving only 2 years of his sentence, he was suddenly transferred to a Louisiana ICE detention center, thousands of miles away from home.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Mahmoud remains determined to not let his spirit be broken. He continues to use his voice to raise awareness about the plight of Palestinian prisoners and the injustices they face. “I may be physically imprisoned, but my spirit and my fight for justice and freedom will never be contained,” he declared.

Mahmoud’s letter also shed light on the inhumane conditions inside the detention center. He wrote about the lack of proper medical care and the inedible food that is served to the detainees. He also talked about the mental toll that being separated from loved ones and being held indefinitely can have on a person. He pleaded for the world to take notice and to hold the authorities accountable for their actions.

Despite everything he has been through, Mahmoud’s letter was full of hope. He spoke about his dream of one day returning to his homeland and being reunited with his family. He talked about the resilience of the Palestinian people and their unwavering determination to achieve freedom and justice.

As I listened to Mahmoud’s words, I couldn’t help but feel inspired by his strength and determination. It is a reminder of the power of the human spirit, and how even in the darkest of times, hope can still prevail.

Mahmoud’s story is just one of many. There are countless other political prisoners like him, who have been unjustly imprisoned and are fighting for their rights every day. It is our duty as human beings to stand with them and demand justice.

In the end, Mahmoud’s letter serves as a call to action for all of us. We must not turn a blind eye to the injustices happening in the world. We must use our voices to speak up against oppression and stand in solidarity with those who are fighting for their freedom and rights.

As I said my goodbyes to Mahmoud, I was reminded of the power of communication. Even though he is physically imprisoned, his words have the power to reach the world and inspire change. Let us all take a step towards making his dream of a free Palestine a reality. Let us all be a voice for the voiceless, and together, let us work towards a world where no one is unjustly detained or deprived of their fundamental rights.
