Israel kills journalist Hossam Shabat, known for his reports from North Gaza

“I ask you now: do not stop speaking about Gaza,” he said. “Keep telling our stories – until Palestine is free.”

These powerful words were spoken by Palestinian journalist Ayman Mohyeldin during a recent speech at an event highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by the people of Gaza. As I sat there listening to his impassioned plea, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of urgency and responsibility. It was a wake-up call, a reminder that we cannot remain silent in the face of injustice.

Gaza, a small strip of land located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, has been the site of countless conflicts and tragedies. The people of Gaza have endured decades of occupation, blockade, and violence, yet their resilience and determination to fight for their freedom and basic human rights remain unwavering.

As Mohyeldin emphasized, it is our duty to continue speaking about Gaza, to keep telling the stories of its people, until Palestine is free. We must not allow their voices to be silenced or their struggles to be forgotten.

The situation in Gaza is dire. The United Nations has declared it as one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with over 2 million people living in a small area of just 365 square kilometers. The people of Gaza are trapped, unable to leave due to the Israeli-imposed blockade. This has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with limited access to basic necessities such as food, water, and medical supplies.

The recent escalation of violence in Gaza has once again brought the world’s attention to this ongoing crisis. The Israeli military’s bombardment of Gaza, which began on May 10, 2021, has claimed the lives of over 250 Palestinians, including 66 children. The destruction of homes, schools, hospitals, and other vital infrastructure has left thousands of families displaced and struggling to survive.

The Palestinian people are facing unimaginable pain and suffering, yet they continue to resist and fight for their rights. As we speak, there are thousands of Palestinian activists, journalists, and civilians on the ground, documenting and sharing the realities of life in Gaza. They are risking their lives to ensure that the world knows the truth.

It is our responsibility to amplify their voices and share their stories. We must use our platforms and our privilege to spread awareness and call for action. We cannot turn a blind eye to the atrocities being committed in Gaza. We must stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and demand an end to the occupation and blockade.

But our support cannot stop at just speaking out. We must also take concrete actions to support the people of Gaza. This can be done by donating to organizations providing humanitarian aid, participating in protests and demonstrations, and putting pressure on our governments to take a stand against these injustices.

It is also crucial to educate ourselves and others about the history and root causes of the Palestinian struggle. We must understand that this is not a conflict between two equal sides, but a systematic oppression of a people by a powerful state. We must reject the false narrative of “both sides” and acknowledge the unequal power dynamics at play.

As Mohyeldin stated, “until Palestine is free.” These words are a reminder that the fight for justice and freedom is ongoing. It will not end until Palestine is no longer occupied and its people are able to live in peace and dignity.

In the words of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, “we have on this earth what makes life worth living.” The people of Gaza have shown incredible resilience and strength in the face of unimaginable adversity. They have not given up, and neither should we.

So I ask you, do not stop speaking about Gaza. Keep telling their stories, keep spreading awareness, and keep demanding justice. Together, we can make a difference and work towards a free and just Palestine.
