Berlin – A one-day strike at 13 major German airports has caused chaos and frustration for travelers on Monday. The strike, which began at midnight on Sunday, was called by the ver.di service workers union and affected airports including the Frankfurt and Munich hubs, as well as all other main destinations in the country.

The strike, which also targeted airports in Bremen, Hannover, Duesseldorf, Dortmund, Leipzig/Halle and Stuttgart, was a result of two separate pay disputes. One involved negotiations for a new pay and conditions contract for airport security workers, while the other was a wider dispute over pay for employees of federal and municipal governments.
The German airports’ association, ADV, estimated that more than 3,500 flights would be cancelled and around 560,000 passengers would be affected by the strike. The union had announced the strike last Friday, but added a short-notice walkout on Sunday in order to ensure the effectiveness of their measure.
