Why Abby Stein—a transgender rabbi raised ultra-orthodox—stands up for Palestine

As a member of the queer community, I have often found myself struggling against the government and the status quo. But through these challenges, I have also come to realize that our community possesses a unique strength and resilience. We are not easily controlled or silenced, and this is something that sets us apart.

Let’s be honest, being queer is not easy. From facing discrimination and violence to being denied basic rights, we have been through it all. But despite these struggles, we continue to fight for our rights and for a world that embraces diversity and inclusivity. And this constant battle against the system has made us resilient, both as individuals and as a community.

We know what it means to struggle against the government. We have seen laws and policies being used to oppress and marginalize us. We have witnessed our rights being stripped away and our voices being silenced. But despite these challenges, we have not given up. We have organized protests, signed petitions, and used our voices to demand change. We have shown that we will not be controlled by a government that refuses to recognize our rights and our existence.

But it’s not just the government that we struggle against. The status quo, which is deeply rooted in heteronormativity and gender binaries, also poses a constant challenge for us. We are constantly told that we don’t fit into societal norms and that we should conform to the expectations of others. But we refuse to conform. We refuse to be confined to narrow definitions of gender and sexuality. Instead, we embrace our identities and challenge the status quo every day.

This constant struggle has made us stronger and more resilient. We have learned to stand up for ourselves and for each other. We have built a community that supports and uplifts one another. We have shown that we are not just a marginalized group, but a powerful force that cannot be ignored.

One of the most important things that sets us apart is that we are not easily controlled. Our community is diverse and intersectional, and this makes it difficult for anyone to control us. We come from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, but we are united by our fight for equality and acceptance. We cannot be silenced or controlled by those who seek to oppress us. We will continue to raise our voices and demand our rights until we are heard and seen as equal members of society.

Our community has faced many challenges, but we have also achieved significant progress. We have come a long way from the days of being criminalized and pathologized. We have seen the legalization of same-sex marriage in many countries, and more and more people are becoming aware and accepting of the LGBTQ+ community. But our fight is far from over. We still face discrimination and violence, and our rights are still not fully recognized.

But I believe that our struggles have only made us stronger. We have learned to persevere and to never give up. We have built a community that stands together in solidarity. And most importantly, we have shown that we will not be controlled. We will continue to break barriers and challenge the status quo until we achieve full equality and acceptance.

So to my fellow queer individuals, I want to remind you of the strength and resilience that lies within us. We have faced many challenges, but we have also achieved many victories. Let’s continue to stand together and support each other in our fight for equality. And to those who may not understand or accept us, I urge you to listen to our voices and recognize our struggles. Together, we can create a world that celebrates diversity and embraces all forms of love and expression. And we will not be controlled by anyone who seeks to oppress us.
