Cuba’s Foreign Minister Accuses US Senator of Undermining Peace Efforts in Latin America
In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla expressed his disappointment and frustration with US Senator Marco Rubio’s actions in Latin America. Parrilla accused Rubio of having a “personal and corrupt agenda” that goes against the stated peace goals of President Donald Trump in the region.
Rubio, whose parents are Cuban immigrants, has been a vocal critic of the Cuban government and has actively worked to tighten US policies towards the island nation. However, Parrilla believes that Rubio’s actions are not in line with the Trump administration’s efforts to improve relations with Cuba and promote peace in the region.
In the interview, Parrilla stated that “Senator Rubio’s actions and statements are not only damaging to the Cuban people, but also counterproductive to the stated goals of the US government.” He went on to say that “Rubio’s obsession with Cuba and his personal vendetta against the Cuban government have led him to pursue a misguided and destructive agenda.”
Parrilla’s comments come after Rubio accused Cuba of “meddling” in the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela. The senator has been a vocal supporter of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó and has called for the removal of President Nicolás Maduro from power. However, Parrilla believes that Rubio’s statements are simply a ploy to further his own political interests.
The foreign minister also criticized Rubio for his role in the recent decision to suspend commercial flights between the US and nine Cuban cities, including the capital Havana. The move, which was announced by the Trump administration in October, has been condemned by many as a setback to the progress made in US-Cuba relations under the Obama administration.
Parrilla stated that “Senator Rubio’s actions have caused great harm to the Cuban people, who have been greatly impacted by the suspension of commercial flights. This decision goes against the interests of both the US and Cuba, and it is clear that it was made to appease a small but powerful group of hardline Cuban exiles in Florida.”
The foreign minister also accused Rubio of using his position to further his own personal financial interests. He pointed out that Rubio has received significant campaign contributions from anti-Castro groups and has close ties to the sugar industry, which stands to benefit from the recent tightening of US sanctions on Cuba.
Parrilla emphasized that Cuba remains committed to promoting peace and stability in the region and is willing to work with the US towards this goal. He highlighted the positive developments in US-Cuba relations during the Obama era, which saw the restoration of diplomatic ties and the signing of several agreements on issues such as healthcare and environmental protection.
The foreign minister also reiterated Cuba’s support for Venezuela, stating that “Cuba stands with the Venezuelan people and their right to self-determination. We reject any attempts by external forces to intervene in Venezuela’s internal affairs.” He also called for a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the crisis in Venezuela.
In conclusion, Parrilla urged Senator Rubio to reconsider his actions and to work towards promoting peace and cooperation in the region. He stated that “It is time for Senator Rubio to put aside his personal vendetta and work towards building a positive and mutually beneficial relationship between the US and Cuba. Only through dialogue and cooperation can we achieve true peace and stability in Latin America.”
