‘If I’m killed on this mission…’: Global Sumud Flotilla sets sail for Gaza despite Israel’s threats

Amidst the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, two brave activists, Iara Modarelli and Leila Hegazy, are calling in to share an update on the Global Sumud Flotilla. The Global Sumud Flotilla is a peaceful, nonviolent movement that aims to break the illegal Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip and bring attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

In a conversation with TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez, the two activists shed light on the critical days ahead for the flotilla and the current status of their journey. The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprised of international activists from various countries, set sail from Italy on July 21st, 2021, towards Gaza, a journey of solidarity and hope.

Iara Modarelli, a Brazilian activist and one of the organizers of the flotilla, shared her motivation for joining this important cause. She said, “We are here to show our support and solidarity with the Palestinian people who have been living under the oppressive Israeli blockade for over 14 years. We believe in the power of nonviolent resistance and the importance of standing up against injustice.”

Leila Hegazy, an Egyptian activist and a member of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, added, “The blockade on Gaza has caused immense suffering for the people living there. The lack of access to basic necessities such as food, medicine, and clean water has resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis. We cannot stand by and watch this injustice continue.”

The Global Sumud Flotilla has faced numerous challenges since its departure from Italy. The activists have encountered multiple obstacles, including the interception of their vessel by Israeli naval forces. However, their determination and courage have not wavered.

Maximillian Alvarez, a strong advocate for the Palestinian cause, expressed his admiration for the activists and their mission. He said, “The Global Sumud Flotilla represents the resilience and determination of the Palestinian people. It is a powerful symbol of solidarity and hope in the face of oppression and adversity.”

The critical days ahead for the flotilla involve navigating through the Mediterranean towards Gaza, despite the risks and challenges posed by the Israeli blockade. The activists remain determined to reach their destination and break the illegal blockade, which has caused immeasurable suffering for the Palestinian people.

Iara and Leila highlighted the importance of international solidarity and urged people from all over the world to support their cause. “Our message is simple – we are all human beings, and we must stand together against injustice and oppression. We call on people from all walks of life to join us in our struggle for justice and freedom for the Palestinian people,” they said.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is a powerful reminder that even in the face of great adversity, the human spirit cannot be broken. It is a testament to the strength, resilience, and unwavering determination of the Palestinian people.

As the interview with Iara Modarelli and Leila Hegazy came to an end, Maximillian Alvarez expressed his gratitude to the two activists for their courage and dedication. He said, “We stand in solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla and the Palestinian people. We will continue to amplify their voices and support their struggle for justice and freedom.”

In these critical days ahead, let us all stand in solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla and the Palestinian people. Let us raise our voices against the illegal Israeli blockade and demand an end to the suffering of the people of Gaza. Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to a region that has long been forgotten.
