The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for action to be taken against former CEO of the Road Accident Fund (RAF), Collins Letsoalo. In a statement released by the trade union federation, COSATU has expressed its deep concern over the alleged mismanagement and maladministration during Letsoalo’s time at the helm of the RAF.
COSATU, which represents over 1.8 million workers in various sectors, has been a vocal advocate for good governance and accountability in public institutions. It is therefore not surprising that the federation has taken a strong stance on the matter involving Letsoalo.
According to COSATU, the recent revelations of financial mismanagement and irregularities at the RAF under Letsoalo’s leadership are deeply concerning. It is alleged that during his tenure, Letsoalo approved exorbitant salary increases and bonuses for himself and other top executives, while the fund was facing financial constraints and struggling to pay out legitimate claims to accident victims.
This blatant disregard for the financial well-being of the RAF and the rights of accident victims is unacceptable and warrants decisive action from the relevant authorities. COSATU has called on the Department of Transport, which oversees the RAF, to urgently investigate these allegations and take appropriate action against those responsible.
The trade union federation has also urged the Portfolio Committee on Transport in Parliament to summon Letsoalo and other RAF executives to account for their actions. It is imperative that those responsible for the mismanagement of public funds and the denial of justice to accident victims face the full might of the law.
COSATU has also called for a thorough review of the governance structures and processes at the RAF to ensure that such maladministration and financial mismanagement does not occur again in the future. The trade union federation believes that a robust and transparent governance system is crucial for the effective functioning of the RAF and for ensuring that accident victims receive the compensation they deserve.
In addition, COSATU has emphasized the need for a speedy and fair resolution to the outstanding claims at the RAF. The trade union federation has been advocating for the implementation of a no-fault system which would see accident victims receiving compensation without having to go through lengthy and costly court processes. This would not only provide much-needed relief to accident victims and their families, but also ease the financial burden on the RAF.
COSATU has also called on the government to ensure that the RAF is adequately funded so that it can fulfill its mandate of providing support to accident victims. The trade union federation believes that the government has a responsibility to ensure that the RAF is able to meet its financial obligations and provide the necessary support to those in need.
In conclusion, COSATU has made it clear that it will not stand by and watch as public funds are mismanaged and accident victims are denied justice. The trade union federation has called for swift and decisive action to be taken against those responsible for the mismanagement and maladministration at the RAF. It is time for the relevant authorities to act in the best interest of the public and hold those in positions of power accountable for their actions. COSATU will continue to monitor the situation closely and will not hesitate to take further action if necessary to ensure that justice is served.
