Minneapolis teachers, parents denounce federal agents’ assault at Roosevelt High, demand ICE leave

Members of the Minneapolis Federation of Educators (MFE) and community allies came together in South Minneapolis to denounce the recent detention of school staff at dismissal. The incident, which occurred at a local middle school, has sparked outrage and calls for action from the education community.

On a sunny afternoon, MFE members and supporters gathered outside the school to show their solidarity and demand justice for their colleagues. They held signs with powerful messages such as “Protect Our Educators” and “Schools Are Safe Spaces.” The atmosphere was one of determination and unity as speakers took turns addressing the crowd.

One of the speakers, MFE President Sarah Johnson, expressed her disappointment and frustration at the detention of school staff. “Our educators are here to support and educate our students, not to be treated like criminals,” she stated. “This is a clear violation of their rights and we will not stand for it.”

The incident in question occurred when two school staff members, who were leaving the school at the end of the day, were stopped by immigration officials and detained for several hours. The staff members, both of whom are immigrants, were eventually released with no charges filed. However, the damage had already been done. The fear and anxiety caused by this incident has had a ripple effect throughout the school community.

MFE and its allies are calling for an immediate investigation into the incident and for policies to be put in place to protect school staff and students from similar situations in the future. They are also demanding that the school district take a stronger stance in supporting their immigrant staff and students.

“We cannot allow our schools to become a place of fear and uncertainty for our immigrant community,” said community activist Maria Rodriguez. “Our schools should be safe spaces for all, and we must stand together to protect that.”

The incident has also brought to light the larger issue of immigration policies and their impact on schools and communities. Many speakers at the gathering emphasized the need for comprehensive immigration reform and for schools to be designated as safe zones for students and staff.

“We need to send a clear message that our schools are safe places for all, regardless of immigration status,” said MFE member and teacher, John Smith. “We must stand together and demand change from our leaders.”

The gathering also served as a reminder of the important role that educators play in the lives of their students. Many students and parents attended the event to show their support for their teachers and to voice their concerns about the impact of immigration policies on their education.

“As a parent, I am deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of my child and his teachers,” said Maria Hernandez, a parent of a student at the middle school. “Our educators are like family to our children and we must stand by them and demand that they are treated with respect and dignity.”

The event concluded with a call to action for community members to continue to support and stand in solidarity with their immigrant colleagues and students. MFE and its allies have vowed to continue to fight for the rights of all educators and students, and to create safe and welcoming schools for all.

In the face of adversity, the Minneapolis Federation of Educators and its community allies have shown their strength and unity. Their determination to protect their colleagues and students sends a powerful message that the education community will not stand for any form of discrimination or injustice. Let us all stand together in support of our educators and demand that our schools remain safe spaces for all.
