JUST IN: Congress of the People (COPE) leader Mosiuoa Lekota has passed away.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mosiuoa Lekota, the leader of the Congress of the People (COPE). Lekota passed away this morning at the age of 73, after a long battle with illness.

Born on August 13, 1948, in Kroonstad, Free State, Lekota was a prominent figure in South African politics. He was a fearless activist who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of the people. Lekota was a true leader, a visionary and a man of great integrity, who will be deeply missed by all.

Lekota was a founding member of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and a key figure in the struggle against apartheid. He played a pivotal role in the formation of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and was a strong advocate for workers’ rights. Lekota also served as a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and was a former Minister of Defence.

In 2008, Lekota broke away from the ANC and formed the Congress of the People (COPE), with the aim of creating a more democratic and accountable government. He believed in the power of the people and fought tirelessly for the betterment of the country.
