AfriForum hails Lekota as a steadfast decision maker

Last week, South Africa lost a great leader and political figure, Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota. The news of his passing has left the nation mourning and in disbelief. His legacy and contributions to the country will always be remembered and celebrated. As we prepare to lay him to rest this Saturday in Bloemfontein, let us take a moment to reflect on the life and impact of this remarkable man.

Born in Kroonstad, Free State in 1948, Lekota was a prominent figure in the anti-apartheid movement. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in his early twenties and was a dedicated activist in the fight against apartheid. He played a significant role in the formation of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the 1980s, an alliance of over 400 anti-apartheid organizations.

Lekota’s passion for justice and equality led him to become one of the key negotiators in the transition to democracy in the early 1990s. He played a crucial role in the drafting of South Africa’s Constitution, which is regarded as one of the most progressive in the world. He also served as the first premier of the Free State province after the first democratic elections in 1994.

In 1997, Lekota was elected as the Secretary-General of the ANC, a position he held until 2007. During his tenure, he was known for his strong stance against corruption and his unwavering commitment to the principles of the ANC. He was a vocal advocate for the empowerment of the poor and marginalized communities, and his leadership was marked by integrity and selflessness.

In 2008, Lekota made a bold move and left the ANC to form the Congress of the People (COPE), a party that aimed to restore the values and principles of the ANC. He continued to serve as the party’s president until 2014. Despite the challenges and obstacles he faced, Lekota remained resolute in his belief in a united, democratic, and prosperous South Africa.

Lekota was not only a political leader, but he was also a family man and a devout Christian. He leaves behind his wife, children, and grandchildren, who were his biggest source of love and support. He was known for his humility, warmth, and genuine kindness towards others. He touched the lives of many, and his legacy will continue to live on through his family and the generations to come.

As we prepare to say our final farewell to Lekota, let us remember him as a true patriot and a fearless leader who dedicated his life to the service of his country. His passing is a great loss to the nation, but his legacy will inspire and guide us towards a better and brighter future.

The funeral service will be held at the Dr Rantlai Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein this Saturday. It is expected to be a somber yet dignified event, as we pay our final respects to a man who has left an indelible mark on South Africa’s history. The service will be attended by leaders from various political parties, as well as members of the public who wish to bid farewell to this great leader.

It is a time to come together as a nation, to mourn the loss of a remarkable man and to celebrate his life. Let us honor Lekota’s memory by continuing the work he started, by striving towards a more just and equal society. As he is laid to rest, let us be reminded of the words of Nelson Mandela, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

Rest in peace, Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota. Your legacy will live on forever in the hearts of South Africans.
