Taiwan seeks to keep China threat front of mind in MAGA world

DORAL, Fla. – The tension between Taiwan and China has been a long-standing issue in the international arena. As the United States continues its engagement with Taiwan, its representative to the U.S., Ambassador Alexander Tah-Ray Yui, emphasized the need to keep China’s threats in mind during the recent Miami Security Forum held at the Heritage Foundation.

In his speech, Ambassador Yui highlighted the importance of Taiwan’s relationship with the U.S. and how it plays a crucial role in the current foreign policy of “Make America Great Again” (MAGA). He stressed that China’s threat to Taiwan is not just a passive one, but an active and ongoing issue that needs to be addressed.

Recent assessments by America’s intelligence agencies have revealed that China is not planning a military invasion of Taiwan in 2027, however, this does not mean that the threat is non-existent. Ambassador Yui urged the audience to not let their guard down and to remain vigilant against China’s actions.

The Ambassador also expressed his concerns about China’s increasing influence and presence in the region. He stated that China’s expansionist policies are not limited to just Taiwan, but also pose a threat to other neighboring countries in the Asia-Pacific region. This is why the U.S.-Taiwan partnership is crucial in maintaining stability and security in the region.

Ambassador Yui’s warnings about China’s threat are not unfounded. China has been aggressively trying to isolate Taiwan on the global stage and has been using its economic power to influence smaller countries to break ties with Taiwan. In fact, just last month, China managed to convince two of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, El Salvador and Burkina Faso, to switch their recognition to Beijing, leaving Taiwan with only 17 diplomatic allies.

However, Ambassador Yui remained optimistic and highlighted Taiwan’s resilience in the face of these challenges. Taiwan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to democracy, human rights, and regional stability, making it a valuable ally to the U.S. in the Asia-Pacific region.

Furthermore, Ambassador Yui also emphasized the importance of economic ties between Taiwan and the U.S. Taiwan is a key trade partner for the U.S., with two-way trade reaching over $70 billion in 2017. This economic cooperation has not only benefited both countries but has also contributed to the stability and prosperity of the region.

In his speech, Ambassador Yui also reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He stated that Taiwan is willing to engage in dialogue with China, but it must be based on mutual respect and not on China’s terms. This is a clear message to China that Taiwan will not back down from defending its sovereignty and will continue to stand up for its values.

In conclusion, Ambassador Yui’s speech at the Miami Security Forum serves as a reminder of the importance of the U.S.-Taiwan partnership in maintaining regional stability and security. China’s threat to Taiwan is not just a possibility but a reality that needs to be taken seriously. As the U.S. reasserts its leadership in the region, it must also continue to support Taiwan and its commitment to democracy and freedom. Together, the U.S. and Taiwan can overcome any challenges and ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for the Asia-Pacific region.
