I Served 7 Years in Prison. This Is What People Get Wrong About Second Chances

When I tell people, you can hear a pin drop. Then comes the inevitable: “Wow, I never would have guessed. You’re…so impressive.”

Have you ever experienced a moment where you shared something about yourself and the reaction you received was one of surprise and admiration? It can be a truly empowering feeling, but it can also be accompanied by a sense of frustration. Why is it that people are so quick to judge and underestimate others based on their appearance or background?

As a society, we have been conditioned to make assumptions about people based on their outward appearance. We are quick to label and categorize individuals, often overlooking their true potential and abilities. This can be especially true when it comes to achievements and accomplishments. We tend to associate success with certain characteristics or traits, and when someone doesn’t fit into that mold, we are taken aback.

But what if I told you that success knows no boundaries? That it is not limited by age, gender, race, or any other societal construct? What if I told you that anyone, regardless of their background, can achieve greatness and leave a lasting impact on the world?

I am a living example of this. When I tell people about my achievements, their initial reaction is often one of disbelief. They can’t seem to reconcile the image they have of me with the accomplishments I have achieved. And I can’t blame them. I don’t fit into the traditional definition of success. I am not from a privileged background, I don’t have a fancy degree from a prestigious university, and I don’t come from a family of successful individuals. But what I do have is determination, hard work, and a relentless drive to succeed.

Growing up, I was constantly told that I wouldn’t amount to much. I was from a small town, my family struggled financially, and I didn’t have access to the same opportunities as others. But I refused to let those limitations define me. I worked hard, pushed myself to excel in every aspect of my life, and never gave up on my dreams.

And it paid off. I achieved things that people never thought were possible for someone like me. I broke barriers, shattered stereotypes, and proved that success is not limited by circumstances. It is a mindset, a way of life, and a choice that we make every day.

But despite my accomplishments, I am still met with surprise and admiration when I share my story. And while it can be frustrating at times, I choose to see it as an opportunity to challenge people’s perceptions and inspire them to break free from societal norms.

We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with images and stories of successful individuals who fit into a certain mold. We are made to believe that success is reserved for a select few, and if we don’t fit into that mold, we are somehow less worthy. But the truth is, success comes in all shapes and sizes. It is not limited by our background, appearance, or any other external factor.

So the next time someone tells you that you are impressive, don’t let it be because you fit into their idea of success. Let it be because you have defied the odds, overcome obstacles, and achieved greatness despite the limitations placed on you. Let it be because you have chosen to define success on your own terms and have worked tirelessly to make it a reality.

And to those who are quick to judge and underestimate others, I say this: never judge a book by its cover. You never know what someone is capable of until you give them a chance to show you. So instead of being surprised when someone defies your expectations, be inspired by their determination and resilience.

In a world where we are constantly trying to fit in and conform to societal norms, it takes courage to be different and break free from those limitations. But it is that very courage that leads to greatness and leaves a lasting impact on the world. So embrace your uniqueness, celebrate your achievements, and never let anyone tell you that you are not capable of achieving greatness. Because when you tell people, you can hear a pin drop, it is not a moment of surprise, but a moment of inspiration and empowerment.
