Lakers Star LeBron James Opens Up About Kobe Bryant’s Sneaky Tricks on the Court
As two of the greatest players in the history of the NBA, it’s no surprise that Kobe Bryant and LeBron James had countless battles on the basketball court. The two superstars faced each other numerous times throughout their careers, with their epic matchups often resulting in intense, nail-biting games.
But beyond their fierce competition, Bryant and James also had a deep respect for each other and a unique friendship. And recently, James shared a fascinating insight into their dynamic on the court, revealing how Bryant used to “trick” him during their games.
In a recent interview with ESPN, James opened up about how Bryant would often use mental tactics to throw him off his game on the court. James, who was still a young player when he first faced off against Bryant, admitted that he was initially surprised by how much of a mental game the NBA truly was.
“He was always in my ear, always talking trash and trying to get into my head,” James shared. “I didn’t realize how much of a mental game it was until I played against him. He was always three steps ahead, always trying to get an edge in any way he could.”
One particular instance that stands out in James’ mind happened during a game in 2009, when the Lakers and the Cavaliers (now the Los Angeles Lakers) went head-to-head. James recalled how Bryant purposely stepped out of bounds during a play, but cleverly managed to regain possession of the ball before the referees noticed.
“I was so focused on defending him and trying to stop him, that I didn’t even realize he had stepped out of bounds,” James said. “And just like that, he had the ball in his hands again and scored. I was in awe of his quick thinking and ability to use any advantage he could find.”
But despite Bryant’s sneaky tricks on the court, James also admired his competitive spirit and drive to always be the best. He shared that while they were opponents, Bryant was also someone he looked up to and tried to emulate in his own career.
“We had a great rivalry on the court, but off the court, we were like brothers,” James said. “He pushed me to be better, and I respected and admired him for that. We were always competing against each other, but it was all out of love and a desire to be the best.”
Bryant’s death in January 2020 left a void in the NBA and in the hearts of fans and players alike. But for James, he will always cherish the memories and lessons he learned from his old friend and rival.
“He was a true legend, both on and off the court. He taught me so much, and I will always remember the battles we had and the tricks he played on me,” James shared. “I miss him every day, but I know he’s watching over us and smiling down on all of us.”
As the NBA playoffs continue, it’s clear that Bryant’s legacy and influence still lives on. And while James will undoubtedly face many challenges and tough opponents on the court, he will always carry with him the lessons he learned from Bryant, both as a player and as a person.
In the end, it’s not just about winning games, but also about the relationships and bonds formed through the love of the game. And the bond between Bryant and James is one that will continue to inspire and motivate players on and off the court for generations to come.
