Father of alleged Highland Park shooter released early from short jail stay for ‘good behavior’

The father of the alleged gunman in the Highland Park Fourth of July parade shooting, Robert Crimo Jr., is set to be released from jail Wednesday after serving a short sentence due to good behavior. Crimo Jr. accepted a plea deal for lowered charges moments before his trial was set to begin, pleading guilty to seven misdemeanor reckless conduct counts and agreeing to two years probation, 60 days in jail, and 100 hours of community service.

Crimo Jr. was accused of helping his teenage son, Robert Crimo III, obtain a gun license even after he had threatened violence. Crimo III is accused of killing seven people in Highland Park on Independence Day in 2022.

On the day Crimo Jr. was expected to report to jail, he arrived in court wearing a shirt that read “I’m a political pawn” with the words “laws,” “facts,” and “reality” on the back. The judge ordered him to turn his shirt inside out, threatening to hold him in contempt if he violated any other rules.

Crimo Jr. is being released approximately 30 days early after receiving day-for-day credit for good behavior. His release comes two days after a Lake County judge set a trial date for his son, who is expected to represent himself in upcoming proceedings.

Crimo III faces 21 first-degree murder counts, 48 counts of attempted murder, and 48 counts of aggravated battery. Potential evidence includes his admission that he was the gunman when he was arrested hours after the shooting. His trial date is set for February 26, 2024, with the case expected to take anywhere from four to six weeks.

Crimo Jr.’s release is a testament to the power of rehabilitation and the importance of second chances. His story is a reminder that no matter the circumstances, it is possible for individuals to turn their lives around and make positive changes.

The criminal justice system is designed to help people become productive members of society, and Crimo Jr.’s release is a testament to this. As he returns to his family and community, he is a reminder that individuals can learn from their mistakes and be given the opportunity to start fresh.

Crimo Jr.’s release is a sign of hope and a reminder that we all have the potential to make a difference. His story is a reminder that we all have the power to make a positive impact on our community and the world.
