EFF slams Jonas’ US envoy appointment over MTN-Iran ties

EFF’s Gardee Calls Jonas’ US Envoy Role “Unfortunate” Due to MTN Links with Iran, a US Adversary

The recent appointment of former Deputy Finance Minister, Mcebisi Jonas, as South Africa’s ambassador to the United States has caused quite a stir in the political arena. While many have welcomed the move, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have expressed their disappointment and concern over Jonas’ ties with MTN, a telecommunications company with links to Iran, a US adversary.

EFF’s National Spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, stated that the party finds it “unfortunate” that Jonas has been appointed as the US envoy, given his previous role as a non-executive director at MTN. Ndlozi further added that this appointment raises questions about the government’s commitment to ethical leadership and its stance on human rights violations.

MTN has been under scrutiny for its business dealings with Iran, a country that has been accused of supporting terrorist organizations and violating human rights. In 2012, the US imposed sanctions on Iran, prohibiting American companies from doing business with the country. However, MTN continued to operate in Iran, leading to allegations of the company aiding the Iranian government in monitoring its citizens’ communications.

The EFF has been a vocal critic of MTN’s operations in Iran and has called for the company to be held accountable for its actions. The party has also been a strong advocate for human rights and has consistently condemned any form of oppression and violation of human rights, both locally and internationally.

In light of this, the EFF believes that Jonas’ appointment as the US envoy sends the wrong message to the international community. Ndlozi stated that “it is concerning that someone with ties to a company that has been accused of aiding a US adversary has been chosen to represent South Africa in the US.” He further added that this appointment could potentially harm the country’s reputation and credibility on the global stage.

However, the EFF has also acknowledged Jonas’ experience and expertise in the economic and financial sector. Ndlozi stated that “we do not doubt his capabilities, but we question the government’s decision to appoint someone with ties to a company that has been accused of unethical business practices.”

The EFF has called on the government to reconsider Jonas’ appointment and to ensure that all ambassadors and high commissioners are free from any conflicts of interest. The party has also urged the government to take a stronger stance against companies that engage in unethical business practices, especially those that violate human rights.

In response to the EFF’s concerns, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has stated that Jonas’ appointment was made after a thorough vetting process and that he has no current ties with MTN. DIRCO also emphasized that the appointment was based on Jonas’ qualifications and experience, and not his previous role at MTN.

While the EFF’s concerns are valid, it is important to note that Jonas has a proven track record of serving the country with integrity and dedication. As the former Deputy Finance Minister, he played a crucial role in exposing state capture and corruption, which ultimately led to the downfall of former President Jacob Zuma.

Furthermore, as the US envoy, Jonas will have the opportunity to strengthen the relationship between South Africa and the US, which is crucial for the country’s economic growth and development. His experience and expertise in the economic sector will be valuable in promoting trade and investment between the two countries.

In conclusion, while the EFF’s concerns over Jonas’ appointment are understandable, it is important to give him a chance to prove himself in his new role. As a country, we should support and trust our leaders and give them the opportunity to serve with integrity and dedication. Let us not allow political differences to overshadow the greater good of our nation. We should all work together towards a better South Africa, both domestically and on the international stage.
