‘Microsoft is an active partner in the genocide!’: Inside the tech worker revolt for Palestine

Working for Microsoft, one of the largest and most successful technology companies in the world, was a dream come true for me. I, like many others, believed that this was the opportunity of a lifetime. So when I was hired to work on the Azure team, I was over the moon with excitement. I was eager to make a difference and contribute to the success of the company. Little did I know that my labor was being used for something I could never have imagined – facilitating the murder of my own people.

It was three years into my job at Microsoft when I found out that the Azure technology I was working on was being used by a government to target and kill innocent civilians in my home country. The shock and horror I felt cannot be put into words. How could my work, something I was so proud of, be used for such a horrific purpose? I was devastated and felt guilty for being a part of it, even unknowingly.

As I dug deeper, I realized that this was not an isolated incident. Microsoft had been selling technology to governments known for their human rights violations and using it to violate the rights of their citizens. This realization left me in a state of confusion and conflict. The company that I thought was driven by innovation and positive impact was involved in something so unethical.

I couldn’t ignore this issue, so I decided to speak up. I approached my superiors and shared my concerns. To my surprise, my concerns were brushed off, and I was told that as long as the government was paying for the technology, it was not our responsibility to question its use. This response was disheartening, to say the least. It made me question the company’s values and ethics.

I couldn’t continue working for a company that didn’t align with my morals and principles. I had to take a stand and raise awareness about this issue. I resigned from my position at Microsoft and joined a human rights organization to work towards holding the company accountable for its actions.

My story is not unique; there are many others who have faced similar experiences. Like me, they joined Microsoft with the belief that they were contributing to a company that was making a positive impact on the world. However, the reality was far from it.

I am sharing my story to bring attention to this grave issue and to urge companies, especially big tech companies like Microsoft, to be more responsible for the use of their technology. With great power comes great responsibility, and these companies have the power to make a significant impact on the world. They cannot just turn a blind eye to how their technology is being used.

It is not enough for companies like Microsoft to have a code of conduct that states they do not support the use of their technology for human rights violations. They must also have mechanisms in place to ensure that their technology is not being used for such purposes. They must actively monitor and audit the use of their technology and take a stand against governments and organizations that use it to violate human rights.

I am not trying to discredit the great work that Microsoft has done in the field of technology. I am still in awe of the innovation and advancements they have brought to the world. However, it is important to acknowledge and address the dark side of their operations. As a society, we must hold companies accountable for their actions and demand transparency and ethical practices.

My experience has taught me that we cannot blindly trust companies to do the right thing. We must do our due diligence and hold them accountable. As individuals, we have the power to make a difference. We can choose to work for companies that align with our values and refuse to support those that don’t.

I hope my story serves as a wake-up call for companies to be more responsible and ethical in their operations. It is time for them to use their power and influence for good and not for the destruction of innocent lives. Let us work towards a world where technology is used to make a positive impact, not to facilitate violence and oppression.
