Minister should not oversee police operations: Prof. Gumede

Gumede, the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, has recently made a statement regarding the ongoing issues within the South African Police Service (SAPS). He believes that there should have been a dialogue between the former KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner, Mmamonnye Ngobeni, and those responsible for the operations of SAPS.

Gumede expressed his disappointment in the lack of communication and dialogue between the two parties, which has ultimately led to the current state of SAPS in KZN. He believes that if there had been open and honest discussions between Mchunu and the responsible parties, the issues within the police service could have been addressed and resolved much earlier.

The Chairperson stressed the importance of communication and collaboration in any organization, especially in a critical institution such as SAPS. He stated that dialogue is crucial in identifying and solving problems, and it also promotes transparency and accountability. Gumede believes that if there had been regular discussions between Mchunu and those responsible for SAPS operations, the issues of corruption and mismanagement could have been addressed and prevented.

Furthermore, Gumede also highlighted the need for a strong and effective leadership within SAPS. He believes that with proper leadership, the issues within the police service could have been managed and resolved promptly. Gumede urged the relevant authorities to take immediate action in appointing a new KZN Police Commissioner who possesses the necessary skills and qualities to lead the province’s police service.

In addition to the lack of dialogue and leadership, Gumede also acknowledged the challenges faced by SAPS in terms of resources and funding. He stated that the government must prioritize the allocation of resources to the police service to ensure its effective functioning. Gumede also called for the implementation of proper systems and procedures to prevent the misuse of resources and corruption within SAPS.

Gumede’s statement comes at a time when there have been numerous reports of corruption, mismanagement, and lack of resources within SAPS in KZN. The recent arrest of several high-ranking police officers for corruption and the ongoing protests by community members against the inadequate police response to crime are clear indications of the urgent need for action within the police service.

In conclusion, Gumede’s call for dialogue between Mchunu and those responsible for SAPS operations is a crucial step towards addressing and resolving the issues within the police service. It is essential for the relevant authorities to take immediate action in appointing a new KZN Police Commissioner and implementing effective leadership, communication, and resource management within SAPS. Only through open and honest dialogue, can the police service in KZN be restored to its former glory and effectively serve and protect the citizens of South Africa.
