‘If I’m killed on this mission…’: Global Sumud Flotilla sets sail for Gaza despite Israel’s threats

As tensions continue to rise in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a group of activists from around the world have come together to show their solidarity and support for the Palestinian people. Calling in from the Mediterranean Sea, Iara Modarelli and Leila Hegazy, two participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla, spoke with TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez about the current status of the flotilla and the critical days ahead.

For those who may not be familiar, the Global Sumud Flotilla is a peaceful international mission organized by the Palestinian Solidarity Movement to show support for the people of Gaza and their right to self-determination. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the flotilla, which began in 2011 with a group of activists sailing from Greece to Gaza in an effort to break the Israeli naval blockade. This year’s flotilla, consisting of five boats and over 50 activists from various countries, set sail from Italy on June 29th and has been navigating the Mediterranean Sea towards Gaza ever since.

Speaking with Maximillian Alvarez, Iara Modarelli and Leila Hegazy shared their experiences on the flotilla so far and the importance of this mission. Modarelli, a Brazilian activist and journalist, shared that the main purpose of the flotilla is to “bring attention to the ongoing human rights violations and the suffering of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.” She emphasized that the flotilla is a nonviolent and peaceful action, aimed at raising awareness and showing solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Leila Hegazy, a lawyer from the United States, echoed Modarelli’s sentiments and highlighted the significance of the flotilla as a form of resistance against the Israeli blockade. She shared that the blockade, which has been in place for over a decade, has severely limited the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza, leading to an economic crisis and a dire humanitarian situation. The Global Sumud Flotilla aims to break this blockade and deliver much-needed aid and supplies to the people of Gaza.

When asked about the challenges faced by the flotilla, both Modarelli and Hegazy emphasized the constant threat of Israeli aggression. Hegazy shared that the flotilla has already faced multiple instances of harassment and intimidation by the Israeli navy, including their boats being blocked and followed, as well as being buzzed by military helicopters. She stressed that this only strengthens the resolve of the activists to reach Gaza and show their support for the Palestinian people.

As the flotilla nears its final destination, Modarelli and Hegazy emphasized the critical days ahead and the importance of international support. They called on people around the world to join them in solidarity and show their support for the Palestinian people and their struggle for justice and freedom. Both activists expressed hope that the flotilla will bring much-needed attention to the situation in Gaza and put pressure on the international community to take action.

In the face of ongoing violence and oppression, the Global Sumud Flotilla stands as a symbol of hope, unity, and resistance. As it approaches Gaza, we must remember that the struggle for Palestinian rights is far from over and our support and solidarity are crucial in bringing about change. Let us stand with the activists of the flotilla and the people of Gaza in their fight for justice and a better future.
