Lekota was born in Kroonstad, Free State in 1948 and was raised in the small rural town of Ladybrand. He came from humble beginnings, growing up in a poor household and attending a segregated school. However, this did not stop him from pursuing his education and he went on to earn a degree in Social Work from the University of Fort Hare.

In the 1970s, Lekota became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement and joined the African National Congress (ANC). He played a crucial role in organizing and mobilizing the youth during the Soweto Uprising in 1976 and was later arrested and detained for his involvement. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Lekota remained steadfast in his commitment to fighting against the oppressive regime and advocating for a democratic South Africa.

After spending many years in exile, Lekota returned to South Africa in 1990 following the unbanning of political parties. He played a pivotal role in the negotiations for a new democratic constitution and was subsequently elected to the ANC’s National Executive Committee. Lekota was also a key figure in the formation of the Congress of the People (COPE) party in 2008, after he and other ANC members broke away from the party due to disagreements over its direction.

Lekota’s political career spanned over four decades and he held various positions of leadership, including Minister of Defence and Minister of Public Enterprises. He was also a Member of Parliament and served as the President of COPE until 2014. Throughout his career, Lekota was known for his unwavering principles and his determination to fight for the rights of all South Africans.

Aside from his political contributions, Lekota will also be remembered for his charismatic personality and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He was a respected leader and mentor to many, and his passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him.

In a statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences to Lekota’s family and praised him for his selfless dedication to the country. He described Lekota as a “giant of the struggle for liberation” and acknowledged his significant role in shaping South Africa’s democracy.

Tributes have also poured in from various political parties and leaders, all recognizing Lekota’s immense contribution to the country. COPE released a statement describing Lekota as a “true patriot” and a “fearless leader” who will be greatly missed. Many have also taken to social media to share their memories and pay their respects to the late political icon.
