‘There are scarcities of everything’: Trump isn’t helping Cuba, he’s strangling it

“It’s a very dire situation in Cuba right now,” says Medea Benjamin, co-founder of the peace and social justice organization CODEPINK. “The policies of the Trump administration have made every aspect of life in Cuba much more difficult.”

The island nation of Cuba has been facing numerous challenges in recent years, from economic struggles to natural disasters. However, the current situation has been exacerbated by the policies of the United States government, particularly under the leadership of President Donald Trump.

One of the most significant impacts of these policies has been the tightening of the decades-long trade embargo against Cuba. This has severely limited the country’s ability to import essential goods and materials, leading to shortages of food, medicine, and other basic necessities. The Cuban people have been forced to endure long lines and rationing, with many struggling to make ends meet.

But it’s not just the economic impact that has been felt in Cuba. The Trump administration has also rolled back many of the diplomatic and cultural exchanges that were established under the Obama administration. This has not only hindered the progress made in improving relations between the two countries, but it has also had a direct impact on the lives of the Cuban people.

For example, the restrictions on travel to Cuba have severely affected the country’s tourism industry, which is a vital source of income for many Cubans. This has resulted in job losses and a decline in the standard of living for many families. Additionally, the restrictions on remittances, or money sent from Cuban Americans to their families in Cuba, have further strained the already struggling economy.

The Trump administration has also targeted the Cuban healthcare system, which is renowned for its high-quality and low-cost services. The United States has imposed sanctions on companies that provide medical assistance to Cuba, making it difficult for the country to access essential medical supplies and equipment. This has not only affected the Cuban people but also those in other countries who rely on Cuban medical aid, such as during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

But perhaps the most concerning aspect of the current situation in Cuba is the impact on the Cuban people’s human rights. The United States has used its influence to pressure other countries to support its aggressive stance towards Cuba, leading to a decrease in international support for the country. This has made it even more challenging for the Cuban people to advocate for their rights and freedoms.

Despite these challenges, the Cuban people have shown resilience and determination in the face of adversity. They have continued to work towards building a better future for themselves and their country, despite the obstacles placed in their way.

Organizations like CODEPINK have been working tirelessly to raise awareness about the situation in Cuba and advocate for a change in US policies. They have organized protests, written letters to government officials, and provided support to Cuban organizations and activists.

“We must stand in solidarity with the Cuban people and demand an end to the unjust policies of the United States,” says Benjamin. “We must work towards building bridges, not walls, and promoting peace and cooperation between our two nations.”

It’s time for the United States to reevaluate its approach towards Cuba and recognize the harm that its policies have caused. It’s time to lift the trade embargo and allow for open and respectful dialogue between the two countries. It’s time to support the Cuban people in their pursuit of a better future.

As individuals, we can also make a difference by educating ourselves and others about the situation in Cuba and supporting organizations that are working towards positive change. Let’s join hands with the Cuban people and show them that they are not alone in this struggle.

In the words of Medea Benjamin, “We must continue to raise our voices and demand justice for the people of Cuba. Together, we can create a brighter future for all.”
