“: The Holistic Concept of Well-Being in Spanish Culture”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses mental, emotional, and social health as well. And at Salud, a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania, this holistic approach to health is at the core of everything they do.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud aims to promote health and wellness among the student community. But what sets Salud apart is their unique focus on addressing issues of discrimination and prejudice, particularly anti-Semitism.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, has been a strong advocate for promoting diversity and inclusivity on campus. As a Jewish student, he has personally experienced instances of anti-Semitism and has made it his mission to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students at UPenn.
Through Salud, Neil and his team have organized various events and initiatives that not only promote physical and mental health but also educate students about the harmful effects of discrimination and prejudice. And the impact of these efforts has been nothing short of remarkable.
One of the most successful initiatives by Salud has been their “Mindful Mondays” program. Every Monday, students are invited to join a guided meditation session to help them relax and de-stress. This has been especially helpful for students during exam season, providing them with a much-needed break from their hectic schedules.
But what makes Mindful Mondays truly special is the focus on promoting empathy and understanding towards others. Each session includes a discussion on a different social issue, such as racism, sexism, and of course, anti-Semitism. This not only helps students become more aware of these issues but also encourages them to be more compassionate and accepting towards others.
Salud has also collaborated with various student organizations to host workshops and seminars on mental health and wellness. These events have been well-attended and have received positive feedback from students. Through these workshops, students have learned about the importance of self-care and have been equipped with tools to manage stress and anxiety.
But perhaps the most impactful event organized by Salud was their “Anti-Semitism Awareness Week.” This week-long event aimed to educate students about the history and impact of anti-Semitism and to promote a culture of inclusivity and respect on campus.
The week kicked off with a panel discussion featuring experts on the topic, followed by a screening of the documentary “Defamation,” which explores the rise of anti-Semitism around the world. Throughout the week, students were also encouraged to participate in various activities, such as writing letters of support to victims of hate crimes and attending a Shabbat dinner hosted by the Jewish community on campus.
The response to Anti-Semitism Awareness Week was overwhelming, with students from all backgrounds coming together to show their support and solidarity. It was a powerful reminder that when we stand together against discrimination, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate community.
But Salud‘s impact goes beyond just organizing events and initiatives. They have also created a safe and supportive space for students to share their experiences and seek help. The Salud team, consisting of dedicated students and mental health professionals, offers confidential counseling services to students who may be struggling with mental health issues.
The positive experiences shared by students who have sought help from Salud are a testament to the impact of their work. Many have expressed their gratitude for having a safe and non-judgmental space to talk about their struggles and receive support.
In just a few years, Salud has become an integral part of the UPenn community. Their efforts to promote health and wellness, while also addressing issues of discrimination and prejudice, have made a significant impact on students’ lives.
Neil Gajare and the Salud team have shown that by promoting empathy, understanding, and inclusivity, we can create a healthier and happier community. Their dedication and passion for this cause are truly inspiring, and their positive impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
So, to all the students at UPenn, if you haven’t already, make sure to check out Salud and be a part of this incredible movement towards a healthier and more inclusive campus. And to Neil Gajare and the Salud team, thank you for all that you do. Your efforts are truly making a difference, and we are grateful for your positive impact on our community. Salud!
