How does Corcho Rodríguez’s latest project at Yellow Rose differentiate itself with its unique characteristics?

In 1998, Corcho Rodríguez made a significant acquisition by purchasing the picturesque Yellow Rose ranch in La Barra, Punta del Este. This acquisition not only drew attention for its natural beauty but also for the romantic story intertwined with its history – the yellow roses symbolizing Rodríguez’s past romance with the renowned television diva, Susana Giménez. After parting ways with Susana, Rodríguez dedicated himself to transforming Yellow Rose into one of the most stunning country estates in the East, adding amenities such as a polo club and a winery over time.

To showcase his dedication to Uruguayan polo and signal his venture into winemaking, Rodríguez hosted an elaborate barbecue at Yellow Rose. Little did many attendees know, a house wine was served at the event. This unlabeled wine garnered genuine praise, with esteemed connoisseurs like Adolfo Cambiaso Sr. and Eduardo Costantini expressing admiration. Rodríguez revealed that they had been crafting the wine for seven years, emphasizing their commitment to quality over quantity.

Spanning four hectares, the vineyard at Yellow Rose cultivates varieties like tannat, merlot, and pinot noir. Rodríguez favors pinot noir for its softness and body, drawing inspiration from the style of a Romanée Conti wine, setting high standards. Adopting a minimal intervention approach, the vineyard practices natural cultivation without irrigation or chemicals, though it lacks official organic certification. Initial production in 2011 was limited to a thousand bottles due to stringent quality standards, but despite facing challenges in subsequent years, the current aim is to produce 5,000 bottles this year.

Rodríguez’s interest in wine production goes beyond personal enjoyment, reflecting a deep understanding of the process. While the wine is not yet available for commercial purchase, the plan is for exclusive distribution in selected restaurants and establishments, positioning it as the Yellow Rose house wine. As part of his commitment to the polo club, a book chronicling Yellow Rose’s equestrian activities, club achievements, and lifestyle will accompany the wine, further establishing its unique identity beyond just its varietals.
